Bellapais is a beautiful small
village in the hills above the resort town of Kyrenia The village
owes much of its popularity to the beautiful surrounding countryside,
and the romantic half-ruined abbey that gives the town its name,
founded in the late twelfth century by the Augustinians.
In Bellapais itself, something of the flavour of this bygone
age remains and it is easy to spend hours meandering about the
streets admiring the panoramic views down to the coast.
The abbey dominates the tumbling
terraced houses in its shadow and is recognized as one of the
most beautiful Gothic buildings in the country. The thirteenth
century church and fourteenth century cloister are still intact
and well-worth a visit, whilst the other ruined sections lend
the site a pleasantly melancholy and slightly eerie atmosphere.
After wandering the abbey there
are a number cafes, bars and restaurants where you can quench
your thirst and taste the delicious Cypriot food, why not while
away an hour or two.and take in the ambience of the village,
don't forget! reserve yourself a table at the amazing restaurant
in the grounds of the Abbey ( Not to be missed) for a night
of gourmet food and fine wine, alternatively there are lots
of superb restaurants surrounding the abbey, where you will
have a night to remember.
Bellapais is the most quaint and
romantic place to visit in North Cyprus, by day or especially
by night a must see for all visitors to Northern Cyprus.
